Now and Then
THEN - In 1991 when the Honeysuckle masterplan was adopted, the Newcastle CBD and inner suburbs had suffered two decades of decline, population loss, physical degradation and sustained job losses. Many of its heritage buildings lay in a state of disrepair, the former rail yards lay abandoned and contaminated. Newcastle turned its back on the harbour.
NOW - The transformation of each of the Honeysuckle project precincts is on display. Four of the precincts have been completed and a fifth is all but complete. 38 hectares of the 50 hectares project area have been transformed, including 11 hectares of quality public open space. When complete in the near future, it will be possible to walk, jog or cycle the entire four kilometres of harbourside promenade between Carrington and Merewether Wharf and on to Nobbys headland.
