Facts About Honeysuckle
Honeysuckle Development Corporation started in 1992 with $100 million of State and Federal funding primarily through the Building Better Cities program. The Corporation became self-funding on 1997.
The Corporation has provided $88.65million for community works such as:
- 10 hectares of public, open space;
- the regeneration of major thoroughfare into the city;
- the dredging of Throsby Creek;
- construction of the new Cowper Street Bridge into Carrington;
- 167 affordable/special needs housing throughout Newcastle (remaining in public ownership);
- a bus/rail transport interchange at Newcastle Railway Station; and
- extensive seawall stabilisation, wharf repairs and renovation to significant heritage buildings.
The Hunter Valley Research Foundation estimates the Honeysuckle project has created 4,425 jobs (full-time, one-year, mainly in construction sector).
The project will create a total of 8,458 jobs by project end (mainly in the construction sector) and up to 5000 jobs when businesses start to operate on site.
By 2007, the operation of the Crowne Plaza Hotel is expected to create 1123 jobs (full-time for one year).
The Hunter Valley Research Foundation estimates that the project has generated an economic impact of more than $1 billion to date and will generate $2 billion by 2013.
The operation of the Crowne Plaza hotel is estimated to generate $117 million in the tourism (restaurant/café/accommodation) sector by 2007.
