Winning design for playground chosen
A public art playground featuring curved walls with port holes is the winning design for a new recreation area in Worth Place Park on the foreshore at Honeysuckle.
Member for Newcastle Jodi McKay today announced Zenscapes and Milne Stonehouse Artists had won the national design competition to create a playground in the Park.
The park is part of the Lee Wharf (stage 3) development project and will feature over 2000m of public open space.
It will include:
- The Zenscapes and Milne Stonehouse Artists public art playground;
- An extension of the existing promenade along the harbour’s edge;
- Extensive grassed areas;
“I congratulate Zenscapes and Milne Stonehouse Artists for the design which reflects the geological, maritime and indigenous elements of the site’s history,” said Ms McKay.
“It will deliver an inviting ‘hands on’ experience for children and adults.”
Ms McKay said that when Lee Wharf Stage 3 is complete in mid-2009 retail shops, offices, cafes and restaurants would open onto the park and playground, making it a great destination for families.
“Where derelict cargo sheds and wharves once barred access to the harbour there will be a vibrant public space,” Ms McKay said.
Ms McKay said Hunter Development Corporation would first need to remediate a small section of the planned parklands and currently has an environmental assessment for the remediation works on exhibition through the Department of Planning.
The public art playground design submissions were assessed by a panel including urban designers, artists, and arts and development managers.
Submissions needed to address a range of criteria including accessibility, design life span, heritage and historical considerations, innovation, long term maintenance and safety and amenity.
